V Volya has moved from state to state for most of their life. Because of that, finding work often meant turning to a temp agency—it was the most reliable way to get started in a new place.
But after moving to the West Coast, they hit a rough patch. “I was struggling to find a job for several months,” V said. That changed when they connected with Verstela in Beaverton, OR. “They were able to get me a job almost immediately.” V stayed in that role for a little over a year before moving up to Seattle.
Once in Seattle, they spent nearly a year working as a canvasser, until the program was suddenly defunded. When that happened, V went straight back to Verstela — this time to the Kirkland, WA branch. “They were able to get me a job within a week because they already had all my information from before.”
Today, V is a team lead at a moving company—leading people, not just doing the work. The role clicked quickly, in part because of the people around them. “Most of my coworkers are Russian, and I’m Russian as well. I’ve been getting along with everybody there.”
When V’s hours dipped, the Kirkland team helped fill the gap with a temporary second job. “Now I have a good balance—enough money, but not so much work that I’m exhausted.”
That balance has changed their life in a real way. “I have enough energy throughout the week. I’m able to still see friends while also being able to see my partner, and not have to worry about money or paying rent,” V said. “Everything feels balanced in my life for the first time in a long while.”
V also shared how meaningful it’s been to find workplaces where they feel safe and respected. Having jobs where they can show up as themself, without fear or discomfort, has made a huge difference.
After a lot of change and uncertainty, V has work that fits their life—and the stability to focus on what matters outside of it.
