Nasima Ruzi recently moved to the U.S. from Afghanistan with her brother and father, ready to start a new chapter in their lives. However, finding their first jobs in a new country wasn’t easy.

Here’s Nasima’s story.

“When we first arrived, we started looking for jobs right away, but it felt like every door was closing. My brother and I both graduated in Afghanistan, but education here is different. We needed experience, and every place we went said, ‘You don’t have the experience for this job.’ We were jobless and didn’t know where to turn.

We did a Google search and found Verstela, and applied to a job. Alex from Verstela got us interviews with a food packaging company, and that’s where things turned around for us.”

Nasima and her brother were both hired as Food Packaging Associates, working about 50 hours per week.

“I was so relieved when we got the jobs. On our first day, we met the team, and everyone was so kind. The staff at the Verstela Tacoma branch treated us with respect, and the supervisors at the food packaging company were really supportive. It’s not a stressful job, and I like that. My brother and I have been working there ever since, and the company has praised us for being hard-working.”

Not only did their employer notice Nasima and her brother’s strong work ethic—Charles Manno, a Verstela recruiter who worked closely with them was equally impressed by their dedication: “The biggest thing that stands out to me about Nasima is how committed to working she is. Any day, any shift, she’s absolutely on fire to get out there and make something happen for her family. Perfect communication and always where she needs to be when she’s supposed to be there—that goes for her brother, too. You can just tell that they’re not about to squander any opportunities that come their way.”

As for her long-term goals for the future, Nasima shared:

“I want to get more experience and improve my English skills so I can build a better life for myself and my family. Right now, we’re just taking it step by step.”

Congratulations, Nasima! We’re so happy we could help you and your brother find your first jobs in the U.S. and connect you with a great company. And we’re confident your drive will take you far.
